The latest video to our combat footage section took place in Sinjar, Iraq, back in 2015. It is filmed from the viewpoint of a Kurdish sniper overlooking an ISIS position in the city. As a fuel tanker parks up to resupply an ISIS area, the Kurdish sniper takes a perfectly aims shot into the fuel tank and detonates the fuel truck.

The Sinjar region is a major population center for Yazidi and Kurdish people. In August 2014, the Siege of Mount Sinjar took place between ISIS fighters and the Kurdish Peshmerga. This battle led to the massive displacement of local residents, especially from the Yazidi population.

The Yazidi were viewed as “devil worshipers” by ISIS. after the Peshmerga were initially defeated, ISIS slaughtered thousands of Yazidi men and forced their women and children into slavery. Thankfully, by December 2014, the Kurdish Peshmerga launched the Sinjar offensive which ended the siege of Mount Sinjar and liberated the area from ISIS control.

Following the Liberation, 9 mass graves of Yazidi people slaughtered by ISIS were found by the Kurdish fighters. ISIS also destroyed 18 ancient Yazidi shrines. By October 2017 the area of Sinjar had been handed over to the Iraqi government to control.

Kurdish Fighters Versus ISIS

Peshmerga in Kurdish translates to ”Those who face death” and they are the military forces of the autonomous Kurdish region of Iraq. Since the Iraqi Army is forbidden by Iraqi law to enter the Kurdistan Region, the Peshmerga are responsible for the security of the Kurdistan Region. The Peshmerga predates Iraq, starting out as a strictly tribal pseudo-military border guard under the Ottomans and Safavids and later changing to a well-trained, disciplined guerrilla force in the 19th century.

ISIS stands for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. Officially known as the Islamic State and also known by its Arabic-language acronym Daesh. ISIS is a militant group and a formerly unrecognized proto-state that follows a fundamentalist, Salafi jihadist doctrine of Sunni Islam. Its followers have carried out a range of horrifying crimes against humanity during war and peace.
